The German study, plump hardcore led by Dietlind Zohlnhofer of the German Heart Center in Munich, was by far the largest, most rigorous test of the theory that stem cells can be recruited to the site of plump hardcore heart injury, like firefighters to a fire. The researchers focused on 114 patients who had successfully undergone a procedure to reopen their clogged heart vessels following a heart attack. The patients were randomly assigned to receive injections of a placebo or Neupogen, a bone marrow-stimulating drug widely used to spur replacement of white blood cells after cancer chemotherapy. Tests revealed extra stem cells in the treated patients' blood. But six months later, there was no significant difference in heart function, amount of damaged tissue or reclogging of arteries of treated and untreated patients. |
