| This project will mainly focus on the study of molecular biology and biochemistry of Cryptosporidium and Eimieria species with opinions following two major objectives: 1) to elucidate the structure and function of parasite genes and proteins that play fundamental roles on the parasite survival, development and/or interaction with hosts; and 2) to discover and develop molecular-based strategy for the prevention, control opinions or treatment of cryptosporidiosis and coccidiosis of animals and humans. APPROACH: 1) molecular cloning, expression and functional analysis of opinions enzymes and proteins involved in the energy metabolism of apicomplexan parasites, including fatty acid biosynthesis and glycolysis; 2) identification and functional study of novel parasite membrane transporters of cations and/or lipids; 3) characterization of DNA replication factors in cryptosporidium parvum; 4) functional complementation of parasite genes in bacteria or yeast and the test of bacterial/yeast system for functional studies of, and/or high throughput drug screening against parasite genes; and 5) phylogenetic analysis to reveal the evolutionary relationship among parasites and parsite genes/proteins. |
