"I had a healthcare woman in the program tell me, 'Since I came here, I gained 30 pounds. When I was in Mexico, I walked more,' " said Leana Nakielski, healthcare an environmental outreach worker at the Sixteenth Street center and one of the coaches for the Healthy Latino Families program. The ultimate goal is to get through to the children, who, like little sponges, typically tend to soak up the poor health habits of their American counterparts, including snacking on high-fat foods and beverages and sitting around watching TV and playing electronic games. Napoles and others in the program think they are turning a corner. "When we started the program, we gave everyone soda, fruit punch and water with slices of limes and lemons," Napoles says.
